Nescafé - Custom Interactive Vending Machine

As part of Nescafé’s “Coffee Bean to Cup” campaign in Istanbul, we developed a custom interactive vending machine that replaced traditional coin-based input with a far more tactile and thematic interaction: users inserted real coffee beans to activate the machine.

When a bean was dropped into the slot, it triggered both the vending mechanism and an animated sequence visualizing Nescafé’s production journey—from harvesting and roasting to brewing and pouring. The installation blended physical input, storytelling, and automation into a cohesive brand experience that highlighted the campaign’s core message: every cup begins with a bean.

Concept

The goal was to create a playful, memorable interaction that directly connected the user’s gesture with the narrative of the brand. By turning the coffee bean into a literal key, the machine transformed a simple transaction into a mini-story—one that emphasized craft, process, and authenticity.

Technical Details

I developed the full sensing and control system for the machine, including:

  • Custom bean-detection mechanism for reliable event triggering

  • Integration with the vending machine’s internal controls for seamless dispensing

  • Sensor and hardware integration tailored to the coffee bean interaction

  • Custom PCB design and embedded firmware for stable, event-ready performance

  • Real-time communication between the physical input and the animated video sequence

The result was a robust, festival-ready installation capable of continuous use throughout the campaign.
